Report of the Jury (April 9, 1988)
Considering
that work of Pierre van MOERBEKE constitutes a synthesis of a deep
originality between four fundamental branches of mathematics and
mechanics:
- dynamic system theory completion integrable;
- theory of the opposite spectral problem;
- fluid flow having an infinity of integrals first;
- theory of the functions on algebraic curves of finished or infinite
kind;
considering that Pierre van MOERBEKE built algorithms bringing an
definitive answer with the problem of the integrability of the movement
to Poinsot, problem remained open in spite of work of EULER, LAGRANGE,
JACOBI, KOWALEWSKA;
decide to award the Francqui Prize 1988 to Mr Pierre van MOERBEKE,
Professor at the Université Catholique de Louvain.
