Report of the Jury (April 17, 1993) It is with pleasure that the Jury of the Francqui Prize recommends that this prestigious award for 1993 be given to Professor Gilbert VASSART of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. In doing so we recognize a career of over twenty years of excellent science in areas for fundamental and clinical relevance. After initial medical studies Professor VASSART first phase of research focussed on the use of molecular biology in the elucidation of elements important in thyroid function. His accomplishments on the structure, function, physiological and clinical consequences of such key components as thyroglobulin, thyroid peroxidase and the receptor for thyrotropic hormone have culminated in his recognition as a world expert in this area. However this recommendation is not limited to this excellent work. Because of the originality of his experimental approaches and the breadth of his interests, Professor VASSART also contributes on a regular basis to new and emerging areas of research. In this context we cite his seminal and inspiring work on the isolation of a variety of novel members of a large family of hormone receptors. The benefits of this work to society will be felt for may years. In conclusion the Jury would wish to record that the quality of the condidates was extremely high and this reflects well on the future of science in Belgium. Jury members : Professor Hilary
