Michel Van Den Bergh

Report of the Jury (April 26, 2003)

Professor VAN DEN BERGH was characterized by very important contributions in the very active and competitive field from pure mathematics.  Its research concentrates on the fundamental relations between the algebra and the geometry.  This work, which is characterized by its width and its originality, led to the solution of old problems, of which the assumption of Stanley and that of Kac.

The energy and approach of the search for Michel VAN DEN BERGH had a major influence on the not-commutative development of the algebra on an international scale, which becomes obvious within sight of the network of collaborators and joint authors that it developed.  Its contributions of fundamental nature will influence probably the direction of the not-commutative geometry for the future.
