Report of the Jury (April 25, 1987)

Considering that Professor Jacques URBAIN achieved a particularly original research in a new and important field of immunology: the idiotypie;

considering that the work of Jacques URBAIN constantly combined rigorous experimental observations and new and creative concepts; that it opened the way with a new design of the regulation of the immunological answers, with experimental handling of the system immune which leads already to a potential application in medicine: vaccines known as of third generation, calling upon the anti-idiotypiques antibodies instead of the antigens;

considering that the work of Jacques URBAIN is particularly remarkable because it has at the same time theoretical implications, implications in general biology and possible applications in medicine;

considering that one of the remarkable points is that this young researcher carried out a scientific philosopher's stone initially as a recluse then with a team, restricted and dynamics which it animates with much success;

decide to award the Francqui Prize 1987 to Mr Jacques URBAIN, Professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
