Report of the Jury

Marc Parmentier

Report of the Jury (April 10, 1999)

Beginning with his earliest work, Professor Marc Parmentier has been associated with a series of internationally recognised contributions.  These include areas of cell communication via membrane receptors and signalling mechanisms implicated in this proces.  The breadth and depth of these studies have influenced a number of disciplines including endocrinology, neurobiology and HIV disease.

The Jury proposes to award the 1999 Francqui Prize to Professor Marc Parmentier of the Free Universitt of Brussels (French) in special consideration of his fundamental observations on the structure and function of G-protein-coupled receptors.  Of special significance are Professor Parmentier's contributions to the field of co-receptors for HIV infection and their primordial role in HIV pathogenesis.
