Career - Report of the Jury

Mathias Dewatripont

Career

Mathias Dewatripont is one of the best-known and most distinguished economic theorists of his generation in the world.  He has made path-breaking contributions on several topics, particularly in the relatively new area of contract theory.  He is probably best known for his work on dynamic contracting (e.g., Quaterly Journal of Economics, 1989).

His work has received international recognition.  He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society (since 1993).  In 1990 he became the first non-British editor of the Review of Economic Studies.  He has recently been selected as cochairman of the World Congress of the Econometric Society in the year 2000; this congres meets only every five years.  He is a member of the Council of the European Economic Association and will become Research Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in 1998.  He will be a visiting professor at MIT in 1998-1999.

He has a tremendous impact on Belgian economics.  Because of this tireless efforts (extraordinary in someone so young) he has put ECARE (European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics) and Free University of Brussels (French) on the map; throughout the world these are now respected and wellknown centers of economic study.

Report of the Jury (April 18, 1998)

The Laureate has carried out outstanding research in economics, in particular in the development of contract theory, and has shown how this approach can throw light on the nature of institutions.

He has also built up the economics groups at the Free University of Brussels (French) and at the European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics (ECARE) to the point where they are regarded as key centres of economic research in Europe.
