Report of the Jury (April 6, 2002) Dr. Peter CARMELIET is an internationally recognized expert in the medical and scientific fields of angiogenesis and pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders. His work has led to the development of novel technologies and the production of promising drug targets for stroke, cancer, aneurysm formation, thrombosis and other diseases. For example, he demonstrated that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a dominant role in angiogenesis and that hypoxia stimulates this VEGF-driven process. His studies in haemostasis have centred on Gas6, a protein S homologue. Mice lacking this gene are protected against thrombosis without causing bleeding, initiating important new therapeutic avenues. At the young age of 40 he became a full Professor at the University of Leuven and his laboratory has trained more than 30 pre and postdoctoral students, considerably enriching the academic community in Belgium. His reputation as a collaborator is impeccable, and his laboratory is extremely open and generous in providing materials to help the work of others in these areas. He is unquestionably an international leader and eminent scholar in his field. His groundbreaking research holds the potential to yield effective therapies for numerous medically significant conditions and thus improve the health of many people. In conclusion, Dr. CARMELIET is a superb scientist and at the top of his profession. Jury members :
